A Husband's Pregnancy Craving
Every business has a story, and ours started, believe it or not, with a pregnancy craving. Yes, I’m one of those husbands who suddenly gets hit by the urge to eat something specific—and for me, it was durian.
It was February 2011, and the craving hit me like a ton of bricks. But this wasn't just for any durian. I wanted the creamy, bittersweet top-grade Mao Shan Wang that makes your eyes roll back. Unfortunately, the durian gods were not smiling that day. It was nowhere near peak season.
I drove around Singapore like a headless chicken, searching in all the usual spots. Finally, I recalled the famous durian stalls in Geylang. I drove there, heart pumping with hope, only to be utterly disappointed. The durians on display were miserably small, pale, and looked... sad. And the price? The seller wanted to charge an arm and a leg for that substandard fruit! I felt sick just looking at them.
The "No Choice" Moment
The desperation was real. After driving for what felt like forever, I ended up at a shopping mall. There was a shop selling frozen durian cake slices. In my absolute state of despair, I bought one slice of frozen cake and ate it.
Oh my goodness, it was a "no choice" moment. It tasted flat, artificial, and utterly failed to scratch that durian itch. It was a miserable substitute for the real deal.
The Obsession to Solve a Singaporean Problem
That moment of disappointment lingered for years. Every time I had an overseas guest, or every time a random durian craving hit (always out of season, naturally!), the problem was the same: no reliable supply of premium durian.
I started to get obsessed. How do we, as durian lovers in a country where durian is practically a national fruit, solve this painful seasonality issue? We Singaporeans love our food fresh and conveniently accessible, and waiting half a year for a good batch is just not acceptable!
The Breakthrough: Freshness Locked In
After 14 years of deep searching and brainstorming, I finally found the solution. It wasn’t about growing them faster; it was about time-traveling the freshness.
Spike Durian partnered with Agrifreeze to leverage their advanced cold-chain blast-freezing technology. We now pick the durians at their absolute peak of perfection and we fresh-lock them. This stops the aging process, keeping the texture, aroma, and flavour exactly as nature intended, ready to be enjoyed months later.
It took us a solid six months of intense trials, non-stop durian testing (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!), and perfecting the freezing program. Now, we are ready!
