Why Spike Durian doesn't stress on durian price volatility

A few friends recently sent me a Straits Times article about the current durian supply glut, asking: "Is Spike Durian affected by these falling prices?"

It’s a fair question. When prices plunge in Malaysia, traditional durian retailers in Singapore often scramble to sell their stocks at ridiculously low prices, even giving away free durian.

But looking at the market through the lens of Spike Durian—which is still in its first month—I realized that our industry's biggest challenges aren't actually about supply. They are about outdated business models due to the lack of innovation or technology.

Here is the objective reality of the traditional durian market in Singapore:

a. The Volume Trap: When supply spikes, sales go up, but margins vanish. Retailers work twice as hard to move stock before it spoils, often earning the same (or less) than they did during low-supply periods.

b. The Quality Lottery: Traditional retailers are at the mercy of the weather in Malaysia. A sudden downpour can ruin a harvest, leading to inconsistent quality and when supply is low, the prices jump for the consumer.

c. The Race Against Time: Durian is a highly perishable commodity. With a shelf-life of barely 48 hours, selling becomes an exercise in "stress-pricing" just to clear the floor. You can see sellers doing live selling and offering "buy 10 durians for a price" which they are not even making any profit.

d. The Seasonal Void: When the Malaysian season ends, retailers often source from other regions. While viable, many Singaporeans feel the texture and profile don't match the premium Malaysian standard.

Creating a "Blue Ocean" Through Deep Tech

At Spike Durian, we aren't playing the same game. While others are fighting over daily market rates, we’ve pivoted towards a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) powered by Agrifreeze technology.

By using advanced deep-fresh tech to lock in quality, we’ve extended our shelf-life to two years.

This changes the math entirely:

a. Price Stability: We don't have to "panic sell" during gluts or "overcharge" during shortages. We don't need to.

b. Consistent Quality: We lock in the fruit at its peak ripeness, ensuring the premium Malaysian flavor is available all year round. We don't shut down like other durian retailers during the off-season.

c. Supply Independence: We provide durians even when the trees are empty.

The Lesson for Entrepreneurs: Innovation isn't just about "new gadgets"—it’s about solving the structural weaknesses of your industry. When you use technology to eliminate the "perishability" of your product, you stop being a commodity and start being a category of one.

In a "Red Ocean," everyone competes on price and attention. In a "Blue Ocean," you compete on value and have the dominance.
