Our Spike Durian Story: The Craving That Couldn't Wait

Our Spike Durian Story: The Craving That Couldn't Wait

A Husband’s Pregnancy Craving (And the 14-Year Durian Problem It Exposed)

Every business has a “that moment.”

Ours started, believe it or not, with a pregnancy craving. Not my wife’s. Mine.

It was February 2011, and I suddenly needed durian the way some people need coffee. Not just any durian. I wanted the creamy, bittersweet, top-grade Mao Shan Wang that makes you pause mid-bite and go quiet.

There was only one problem.

It was off-season.

The Night I Realized “Durian Is a Gamble”

I drove around Singapore like a man on a mission. Same routine you’ve probably done yourself: one stall, then another, then “maybe this one still has good stock.”

Eventually, I ended up at the famous durian stretch in Geylang, fully expecting salvation.

Instead, I saw it.

Small fruit. Pale flesh. That sad look that already tells you what the bite is going to be like. Then came the worst part: the price. The seller wanted to charge premium money for something that clearly wasn’t premium.

That night wasn’t just disappointing.

It was the night I understood the emotional truth about durian:

Even when you buy “Mao Shan Wang,” the outcome can still be random.

And when it’s off-season, the gamble gets worse.

The “No Choice” Moment

Still craving, still stubborn, I ended up in a mall and saw frozen durian cake slices.

In pure desperation, I bought one.

It was… not durian. Not really.

Flat. Muted. Artificial. It didn’t scratch the itch at all. It was the kind of purchase you regret halfway through the first bite.

A “no choice” moment.

And that’s when the real question started haunting me:

Why Can’t We Have Peak Durian Anytime?

Singaporeans love durian. We also love things:

  • reliably good

  • easy to access

  • worth the money

But durian doesn’t behave that way.

Peak season is short. Off-season is unpredictable. Even in season, the same stall can give you completely different outcomes.

So I became obsessed with one Singaporean problem:

How do we stop peak durian from disappearing?

Not “how do we make durian better than nature,” but:

How do we keep nature’s best moment… right there.

The Breakthrough after 14 years: Freshness Has a Peak. We Keep It There.

After years of searching, we realized the answer wasn’t about chasing durians year-round.

It was about preserving them properly — at their peak.

That insight changed everything.

Most people hear the word “frozen” and immediately think of bad experiences. And honestly, they’re not wrong. Traditional freezing methods often form sharp ice crystals that damage a fruit’s structure. That’s why many frozen durians lose aroma, turn watery, or feel “off” in texture.

Agrifreeze — the technology that made this possible

Agrifreeze is our freezing technology partner and the missing piece in solving this problem.

It uses a controlled freezing process that influences how ice forms inside the fruit, encouraging smaller, rounder ice crystals instead of large, damaging ones. This helps protect the durian’s cellular structure during freezing.

The goal is simple: Lock in peak texture, aroma, and flavour — instead of destroying it.

That’s why Spike is built around one non-negotiable principle: We only freeze durians that are already great. Then we use a method designed to preserve what made them great in the first place.

Here's a quick way to see the difference:

What “Spike Durian” Actually Means

When I say Spike isn’t “frozen durian,” I mean it very literally.

Spike is peak-season durian, fresh-locked so you can enjoy it months later — without playing the durian lottery.

That distinction matters to me, because I built Spike to solve a problem I personally felt for years.

Here’s what Spike looks like in practice:

  • We harvest durians only at peak ripeness

  • We select aggressively for quality — I’d rather reject more fruit than let you be disappointed

  • We fresh-lock them using Agrifreeze, a freezing method designed to protect texture and aroma

  • We keep the cold chain tightly controlled so what you receive stays true

  • And we deliver it to you so you can enjoy great durian on your schedule, not the season’s

If any of these thoughts sound familiar:

“I love durian, but I hate wasting money on a bad one.”
“I want something reliable when I’m serving guests.”
“I miss peak durian when it’s not in season.”

Then this was built for you.

Because I wasn’t trying to sell more durian.
I was trying to remove the uncertainty that comes with loving it.

Why I focused on Pahang, Old-Tree, High-Mountain Mao Shan Wang?

I focus on Pahang Mao Shan Wang for a simple reason:
when it’s good, it’s not just sweet.

The best ones are complex — rich, creamy, deeply aromatic, with that bittersweet depth durian lovers chase and remember.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the most consistent expression of that character tends to come from old-tree, high-mountain fruit in Pahang. Not because of labels or hype, but because the quality shows up in ways you can actually taste:

  • a deeper, more layered aroma

  • a thicker, creamier texture

  • a longer, more satisfying finish

  • and more “character” in the flavour overall

This is the kind of durian that stays with you — the kind you think about after the box is empty.

The Real Promise

Spike exists for one simple reason.

I learned the hard way that peak durian is rare, fragile, and far too easy to lose.

Once the season passes, quality doesn’t slowly fade — it’s just gone. And I didn’t want to accept that the only options left were gambling, settling, or overpaying for disappointment.

I never set out to “improve” nature.
That was never the goal.

What I wanted was to protect nature’s best moments — to keep peak durian exactly as it is, instead of watching it disappear with the season.

So when the craving hits, you don’t have to think twice.
You don’t have to guess.
You don’t have to compromise.

You can just enjoy.

Hi, I want to buy some in Singapore and fly home with it. I understand that you thaw it before you send. Is it possible to just send it frozen? Or can you send to Indonesia? Thanks

Mary
