Durian as a Christmas Gift in Singapore: What to Know

Yes, durian makes a good Christmas or year-end gift in Singapore, for the right person and with the right timing. Durian is perishable, so the gift works only if it reaches someone who is home, has space in the fridge and can eat it within a day or two. Treat the delivery date as part of the gift. The season matters too. As of October 2026, Malaysia's main mid-year durian season is over; it ended in September, and the Pahang harvest usually runs from about late June to early September. There's often a smaller second crop around November and December, but it's harder to plan around: the timing moves with the weather, there are fewer varieties and prices run higher. So if you want to give Pahang Mao Shan Wang (MSW) in December, a box fresh-locked at peak season is the option you can plan around.

Who a durian gift suits (and who it doesn't)

Durian divides people. A box of MSW is a generous gift for someone who loves it and an awkward one for someone who doesn't, so think about the person before the product.

A durian gift suits:

  • Durian lovers, especially the ones who miss it once the main season is over.
  • Parents, grandparents and relatives who grew up eating durian.
  • A host, when you want to bring something to share at a Christmas or New Year gathering.
  • Friends visiting Singapore over the holidays who want to try good Mao Shan Wang.

It doesn't suit:

  • Someone who dislikes the smell, or who lives with someone who does.
  • Anyone travelling over the holidays. A box that arrives while they're away is a wasted gift.
  • An office that may be empty between Christmas and New Year. Someone has to receive the box and put it in a fridge.

If you're not sure, ask. A short message ("Would you eat Mao Shan Wang if I sent some over?") settles it, and it tells you which days they'll be home.

What you're actually giving

Our Pahang Old-Tree Mao Shan Wang single box is MSW from Pahang, Malaysia, selected at peak season and fresh-locked. Each 400–450 g box is, as our product page puts it, "as much as 1 whole durian". There is no flavouring, no sweeteners and no additives. Expect creamy flesh with a natural bitterness. Seed size varies naturally from box to box.

It is frozen at peak season with Agrifreeze, which says its electromagnetic-field (EMF) freezing keeps ice crystals small and rounded so they do less damage to the fruit's cells, meaning less drip and texture loss when it thaws.

The box is delivered chilled, not frozen, in a cooler bag with gel ice packs. It also comes with an A5 instruction card on how to enjoy it.

MSW isn't the only option. We also offer Black Thorn and D24 single boxes. Black Thorn durian is light and airy, with deep orange-yellow flesh and a bright, berry-like sweetness. D24 is gently sweet with a moderate bitter edge, less intense than MSW, which makes it a gentler start for someone newer to durian. For a seasoned eater who likes bitterness, MSW is the natural pick; our guide to what Mao Shan Wang is explains what sets it apart.

How to send durian as a gift without it going wrong

Run through this list before you check out.

  1. Pick the date and slot at checkout. You choose the delivery date and time slot when you place the order. Standard delivery is 4 pm to 9 pm on weekdays and 12 pm to 6 pm on weekends. Our delivery and storage FAQ has the details.
  2. Make sure someone is there to receive it. The durian is chilled and perishable, so someone has to take the box at the door and put it straight into the fridge.
  3. Choose a day they can eat it. Once it's in the fridge, it should be eaten within 2 days, ideally within 12 to 24 hours.
  4. Tell them it's coming. A surprise is lovely. A surprise durian at an empty flat is not. Give them the date and slot, and one rule: don't put it in the freezer. It must not be re-frozen, because that damages the quality.
  5. Get the address right early. Address changes need at least 2 days' notice before the delivery date. Cancellations also need to reach us at least 2 days before delivery. After that, the delivery is already arranged.
  6. Pass on the serving tip. When they're ready to eat, take the box out of the fridge, open the lid and let it rest at room temperature for at least 20 to 30 minutes before eating.

Timing it for Christmas and New Year

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are when your recipient is most likely to be out, hosting or away. Unless the durian is for a gathering they're hosting, aim for a quieter day when you know they'll be home.

  • Book early. Then check which dates and slots are open at checkout. We deliver on Christmas Day and New Year's Day too. For holiday dates, you can also check with us on WhatsApp at +65 8958 1153.
  • For a gathering, deliver the day before or on the day, if that date is open at checkout. The box is best eaten within 12 to 24 hours, so a week early is too early.
  • Work around travel. If they're going away for New Year, send it before Christmas, or after they're back.

Single box or bundle?

For one durian lover, the single box is the simple choice: as much as one whole durian, for one person or one household to enjoy.

For a family or a gathering, look at the MSW party bundle or the MSW family bundle. Every box is the same Pahang Old-Tree Mao Shan Wang, fresh-locked at peak season, and the family bundle is made for gatherings and hosting. For today's options and price, see the product pages.

One thing to keep in mind: the 2-day window applies to every box. Match the size of the gift to the number of people who will be eating, not to how generous you want to look. A bundle sent to a couple who'll be away over Christmas is too much durian at the wrong time.

Durian gift FAQ

Can I send durian to someone else's address in Singapore?

Yes. You set the delivery address, date and time slot at checkout, and we deliver across Singapore. Someone must be there to receive it, because it's chilled and needs to go into the fridge right away.

Will the durian arrive frozen?

No. It's frozen at peak season, then delivered chilled in a cooler bag with gel ice packs. It should go into the fridge as soon as it arrives, not the freezer.

How long does a durian gift keep?

In the fridge, eat it within 2 days, ideally within 12 to 24 hours. Don't re-freeze it, because that damages the quality.

Is frozen durian good enough to give as a gift?

It depends on what was frozen and how. Our Mao Shan Wang is selected at peak season and frozen with Agrifreeze, which says its EMF technology keeps ice crystals small enough to protect the fruit's cell structure. There are no additives. We'd say: send it to someone who loves MSW, and let them judge.

Can I order durian gifts for my company or clients?

Yes. For 30 boxes or more, use our corporate durian orders page; corporate orders need 7 days' lead time.

If you have a durian lover on your list this year, start with the Pahang Old-Tree Mao Shan Wang single box. If you're bringing durian to a gathering, the bundles above are made for sharing.
